Pastel techniques were used in this memorial portrait of a young man with his daughter, from a family photo. The background was modified and the stuffed rabbit plumped up to be recognizable as the little girl's favorite toy (see reference photos provided by the family.)

Oval matting and directional movement established through value contrasts and pastel strokes guides the eye to the faces of both subjects, so they share equal importance. The artwork was reproduced on textured fine art paper to enhance the effect of the pastels.
